Overview

Allen Bradley SMC-3 Controller

The SMC-3 solid-state soft starter by Allen Bradley is low voltage, compact, and cost-effective Smart Motor Controller that features true three phase control, for superior speed control and a smoother, safer motor start-up and stop. The SMC-3 includes overload protection, integral bypass, and motor and system diagnostics to provide you with a flexible electrical motor control solution which reduces downtime and improves productivity.

The embedded bypass automatically closes when the motor has reached full speed to minimise heat generation. For fast diagnostics the SMC-3 also features a Hold To Test/Push To Reset button, which detects faults and enables the device to be reset. The LED display provides immediate status indication and assists with troubleshooting. Due to its convenient compact size this device uses less panel space and offers ease-of-installation. DIP switches ensure that set-up is efficient and secure, as they allow setting of the START/STOP profile, built-in overload, connection type, trip class and auxiliary contact characteristics.

Integration of the SMC-3 in your electrical motor control system results in less stress/shock to mechanical components due to decreased start-up torque, helping to extend the lifespan of your equipment. It protects against machine damage as line and motor diagnostics detect single-phase conditions. System maintenance is reduced due to lower peak currents during start-up, which lowers operating costs.

Allen Bradley offer a range of smart motor starters that will ensure reliable high performance and precision, giving you a long-lasting solution for your application.

What is a soft starter?

A soft starter is a type of motor starter which is often used to control AC electric motors. It is used during a machine start-up process to manage the speed and torque of the motor and prevent electrical surges (inrush currents). It achieves this by gradually and safely increasing the voltage until the machine is running at full speed. Solid-state switches can be used in this type of starter to regulate the voltage, as well as the starting current supplied. These devices are useful for the protection of electrical motors against damage and from heating caused by recurrent starts and stops, and can extend its service life. They are a simple, economical solution which is often used in industrial applications such as conveyors, pumps, and fans.

Soft starters were developed to overcome the drawbacks of direct on line (DOL) and star-delta starting of single and three phase a.c. induction motors, such as high starting currents, voltage peaks and mechanical snatch. Allen Bradley motor starters provide advantages such as energy saving through reduced peak kVA, reduced starting torque, prolonged equipment life, minimised voltage dip problems, allowing minimum cable conductor size, and elimination of high current transients; when a 3-phase motor changes from Star to Delta.
